The current gallery, located in the sacristy and in two adjoining rooms, contains precious paintings from the old basilica, about forty works from the 13th to 19th centuries, some copies of rare documents including an illustrated Carolingian Bible from the 8th century and various engravings of the fire of 1823. SMALL CEMETERY OF THE MONKS A number of Benedectine monks are buried in a hidden cemetery (not visitable) beneath the Basili- ca at the left entrance door. Among them is one of the first Australian Aboriginal religious in Rome, Francis Xavier Conaci, a novice from the Benedectine Monastery in New Norcia, Western Australia, who died in Roma on 10 October 1853. There is a boomerang image in the marble floor just outside the left door, near where Francis is buried. |
